New to Vaping

New to vaping? Also known as ‘E-Cigarettes’ or ‘Vapes’, vaping devices come in numerous styles and designs. The vaporizer is an electronic device that heats liquid to create a vapor that is inhaled, hence the term ‘vape’ or ‘vaping’.

The working parts of a Vaping Device

With different models and styles, consumers have plenty of choices based on their own preferences in regard to options. Nearly all vapes have two key components; a tank and a battery. The tank is filled with a liquid known as ‘Vape Juice’ or ‘E-Liquid’ that is sold separately from the device. The tank contains a heating element or ‘coil’ that heats the liquid into vapor when powered by the battery.

Some vapes have a wide range of features such as adjustable wattage or temperature controls. Before using your vape for the first time, take a moment to determine how you want to vape.

Do I Inhale?

When vaping for the first time, take it easy. Start vaping with short, shallow puffs. These are called ‘primers’ or primer puffs. This method gradually increases production of your preferred vapor flavor. Two common methods of inhaling include:

  • Mouth to Lung or Mouth Holding - holding the vapor in the mouth for several seconds before inhaling. This method allows you to slowly fill your mouth with vapor. Hold it for a few seconds and then open your mouth and breathe the vapor into the lungs. Then exhale.
  • Direct Lung - actually inhaling the vapor into the lungs. This method requires you to quickly inhale the vapor deep into your lungs and then quickly exhale.

You can even exhale the vapor after you’ve held it in your mouth if you wish. The technique is similar to that of cigar smokers who indulge in quick puffs, allowing the vapor to absorb through the mucous membranes of the mouth.

So no, you don’t have to inhale to experience vaping!

E-Liquid & Flavors

E-Liquid or ‘Vape Juice’ is available in a variety of nicotine strengths. For consumers who are new to vaping, the strength of nicotine you choose should be based upon the number of cigarettes you smoke in a day. For those who do not smoke cigarettes, its best to choose a vape juice that does not contain any nicotine. Common nicotine strengths are:

  • No Nicotine (0 mg)
  • Low Nicotine (3mg)
  • Moderate Nicotine (6 mg)
  • High Nicotine (12 mg)
  • Salt Nicotine (20mg – 50mg)

With hundreds of vape juice flavors to choose from, your options are limitless! Some common flavor profiles available are fruits, desserts, coffee and tobacco.

Where can I vape?

Be aware of vaping laws where you live. New FDA restrictions regarding vaping have gone into effect regarding certain flavors. To date, 17 states have introduced legislative measures that restrict use. Check out the U.S. E-cigarette regulations for your state.
